Some TikTok users may soon have to pay a premium to access content from their favorite creators. On Tuesday, TikTok revealed that it would be introducing a feature called “Series,” which permits certain creators to put their exclusive content behind a paywall.

In a recent post that TikTok published, the company announced that the “Series” feature will enable select creators to share their premium content and strengthen their bond with the platform’s community through their unique stories, talents, and creativity. Initially, only a limited number of creators will have access to this feature, with more creators able to apply for it in the upcoming months.

According to the TikTok blog post, creators who have access to the Series feature will have control over the price of their content, and users who want to access the content can do so through direct in-video links or the creator’s profile. Series creators can have up to 80 videos, with each video lasting no more than 20 minutes, allowing them to showcase longer-form content than is currently available on TikTok.

Creators were not convinced by the TikTok Creator Fund last year due to its limited funding. A few of them had previously proposed that TikTok should adopt a model similar to YouTube, where they could generate revenue from video advertisements.

In January 2022, Instagram revealed that it was testing subscriber features for stories, live videos, and badges. Because of the Creator Fund’s limited resources, creators expressed their dissatisfaction with it at the beginning of last year. Before, several producers called for TikTok to move to a YouTube-style business model where they could make money from video commercials.

Some social media platforms have experimented with paywall content as a means of generating revenue for authors. Instagram revealed that it was exploring subscriber features for stories, lives, and badges in January 2022.
